The Minors maintained their 100% winning record with a 14 point victory over Clann na Banna in the Championship, 0-22 to 1-5. The Johnnies started the game on top winning the throw up and dominating possession right away. This early possession led to points from Conor Gilmore (2), Martin Keenan (2) and Chris McKay before Banbridge got their first point from a 14 yard free. However, it didn't take St. John's long to cancel this score out and regain their superiority with points from Martin Keenan, John Girvan as well as two long distance points from Darren Burns and Conor Gilmore. St. John's could have been forgiven for relaxing and thinking the game was over but pushed on and added to their lead thanks to another two points from McKay while John Girvan and Martin Keenan also added points to leave the half time score St. John's 0-15, Clann na Banna 0-2. It was important St. John's started the second half on top as in the league game Banbridge hit three goals in the first five minutes of the second half and when they scored a point from the first play of the half, a repeat might have been on the cards but the Johnnies stepped it up and got points of their own from Conor Gilmore and Hugh Flanagan before Banbrdige enjoyed their best spell of the game scoring two points and also a goal from a penalty. St. John's had a couple of goal chances but couldn't take them and instead tapped over the points from Darren Burns, Chris McKay and Martin Keenan. The game finished with the two teams exchanging points, the Johnnies final score coming from Chris McKay. Full time score - St. John's 0-22, Clann na Banna 1-5 Team and Scorers - Darren Morgan; Kevin Keenan, Joe Milligan, Conor Savage; Coalan Carville, Darren Burns (0-2), John Girvan (0-2); Chris McKay (0-4), Neill Magorrian; Conor Gilmore (0-8), Martin Keenan (0-5), Jerome Gordon; Gavin Marmion, Hugh Flanagan (0-1), Paddy Keenan. Subs - Colm Kelly (for Gavin Marmion). This was without doubt the best performance of the season from the Minors due to the hard work of the players, the great defensive work as well as the movement of the St. John's players which was first class and this led to 4 points coming from the half back line and Banbridge weren't the first team to have been caused problems by the movement of the players. One slight criticism was sometimes their was one pass too many made when the score was on and perhaps looking for the 'perfect score'. |
