St Johns 2-10 Tullylish 2-12
ACFL Division 3
Saturday 8 October 2011
@ St Johns
The seniors played top of the table Tullylish on Saturday afternoon with a small panel and will be very disappointed not to have won the game and earned the two points while Tullylish will be thinking how did they win the game.
The Johnnies dictated much of the play in the first half and got of to a perfect start as a high ball in by midfielder Dan Marmion caused chaos in the back line and Conor Morgan grabbed a goal. Chris McKay was in prominent mood causing an aerial threat on the day and grabbed two well taken points while set up a Damien Murray for a point midway through the half. Around the middle St Johns won most of the possession while in defence Ronan Kelly, Darren Savage and Declan Gilmore had maintained the threat of the Tullylish forwards very well with Tullylish only being able to register two from play and one free kick in the first half.
Conor Morgan added another point from a 14 yard free kick and Conor McCombe added a good point from distance and Aiden Kelly added the last point of the half for St Johns, the home side had many more chances in the opening half with a few goal chances going astray. In the second half Tullylish started the brighter and added three points in a row, while Darren Savage added the first score of the half for St Johns.
It was then that the away side got their first goal a miss kick for a point was dropping into the square and a Tullylish forward went to knock the ball into the net but missed the ball and the ball went past Martin Keenan and into the net. Chris McKay then added a point either side of the away side getting two points one of which was a free which still left the game a draw for the first time since the game began.
It was then that Tullylish took the lead for the first time as they knocked over two scores as the Johnnies were beginning to find it hard to keep possession from their kick outs. Breaks up the pitch though led to a well taken goal from Chris McKay to send the Johnnies back in front. Then after the kick out Darren Savage picked up on sloppy defending to secure his second point, Tullylish weren’t finished though and added another pointed free.
Conor Morgan added a free of the ground to put three between them again. Tullylish again converted a free and from the resulting kick out and some inaccurate refereeing a clear push on the back went crucially unseen and they grabbed a vital goal which seen the game turn in their favour. With only a minute remaining St Johns couldn’t get another score although Tullylish added the final score of the game to leave it 2-10 to 2-11.
Martin Keenan had a fantastic game in goal for the Johnnies with brilliant kick outs, Ronan Kelly, Darren Savage and Declan Gilmore all did their best to keep the Tullylish forwards quiet, Danny McKay, Conor McCombe and Conor Burns were always their to back the forwards up and won a lot of break ball in the opening period. Dan Marmion and Ryan Addis who made his senior debut had a good game in the middle. Conor Braniff, Conor Morgan and Damien Murray covered a lot of ground throughout although Murray was lost to injury midway through the first half with Neil Magorrian replacing him. Chris McKay, Alan Henderson and Aiden Kelly had a busy game up front and were always out in front to receive the ball. |
