St Johns 2-14 Dundrum 0-10
ACFL Division 3 Relegation Playoff
Sunday 30 October 2011
@ Bright
St Johns finished of their year with a great win in the relegation play off match against Dundrum on Sunday afternoon in great conditions for football at Bright GFC.

Dundrum won the toss but opted to play without the wind something they will definitely regret now. The Johnnies began at a blistering pace with Danny McKay scoring the first point of the game within the first 10 seconds or less. From the kick out Ryan Addis won possession in midfield and from this Conor Braniff won a free kick. Chris McKay knocked over two free kicks in quick succession. Soon after this the Johnnies got their first goal, the ball was played right up the pitch with captain Dan Marmion leading the way, a shot was saved and Conor Morgan was in the right place to hit the net with a rebound.

Again with St Johns winning the midfield duel and Mickey Flynn, Conor McCombe and Conor Burns winning countless break balls the Johnnies were on the attack again this time Danny McKay getting his second point of the game from centre half back as he combined with Chris McKay. It wasn’t until around 17 minutes into the half that Dundrum got their first score which was a point, this was due to the brilliant work of the defence as Ronan Kelly, Cathal O’Conor and Darren Savage all did their jobs brilliantly in the full back line as did Jonathan Addis at half back.

It was Darren Savage he was the source for the next point as he disposed the corner forward and from the attack Aiden Kelly kicked over a nice left footed point. Chris McKay added another pointed free soon after and then Dundrum got their second and last score of the half. Conor McCombe at half forward read the breaking ball very well for the next score and dummied two men with a toe tap before scoring from distance to leave the score 1-6 to 0-2 with around 7 minutes still to play.

From the next kick out Marmion rose highest and punched the ball back into the Dundrum defence and quickest to react was Kelly who added his second of the half. Chris McKay added the next point from play after combining well with Conor Braniff down the left hand side of the pitch. Then Aiden Kelly hit a brace to get his fourth point of the match as Mickey Flynn, Ryan Addis, Conor Morgan and Jonathan Addis all worked hard to make it happen. The last point of the half came from McCombe as he received the ball from Conor Burns and passed the ball over the bar to leave the score at half time, 1-11 to 0-2.

In the second period Dundrum had the wind and grabbed the first point of the half with a free kick. But immediately the Johnnies pegged it back and Conor Morgan hit an excellent point from out on the right. Dundrum added another two points although the Johnnies were in control of the game for a majority of the game. The defence worked tirelessly continually marking tight the danger men and finding a team mate when in possession. The next score for the Johnnies was due to Conor Burns winning break ball in the half back line, Aiden Kelly received the ball and laid it off to McCombe who was fouled in the box.

Conor Morgan distributed the penalty. Dundrum added a pointed free soon after and then from Darren McMullan’s kick out, Danny McKay caught an released to Marmion who passed to Morgan, Chris McKay exchanged with Conor McCombe to hit an excellent point from far out on the right. Then Dundrum had a period of around 5 minutes in which they dominated lumping the ball in, they never actually had a shot on goal although added four free kicks and their last score came from play while the Johnnies last score came from a pointed free from McKay. In the end the final score was 2-14 to 0-10. The St Johns team was as follows:
