Longstone 3-7 St Johns 5-11
ACMFL Division 3
Tuesday 26 July 2011
@ Longstone

The Minors won on Tuesday night to continue their 100% record this season, this their 10th win of the season. They beat Longstone 5-11 to 3-7.

The Johnnies started the game on top getting the first score of the game and winning ball around the middle third nulifying the effect of the Longstone forward line.

Longstone gradually got back into the game and got scores of their own before the Johnnies go their first goal through Darren Burns after strong running from Neill Magorrian and Ryan Gordon. A second goal soon followed after a great diagonal ball from Darren Burns to Chris McKay who fired to the net. Longstone started to win frees within the scoring zone and one of these dropped short but a lack of communication resulted in it dropping into net.

The teams then exchanged points before Darren Burns got his second goal of the game before Chris McKay added another two goals of his own and was winning a lot of ball in the full forward line. Longstone then had a great chance to cancel this out but a point blank save from Darren Morgan prevented the goal but they were not to be denied as minutes later after two more great saves from Darren, Longstone were awarded a dubious penalty which was converted. The teams went in at half time with the score Longstone 2-4, St.John's 5-7.

Inevitably, the tempo dropped from both teams in the second half because of the effort both teams put into the first half in the soaring temperatures as well as the size of the pitch.

As a result of this the second half was a low scoring half with both teams only managing four scores each but St. John's played the game out well and Martin Keenan movement off the ball as well as Darren Morgan's kick outs took the pressure off the defence which was well manned by Joe Milligan at full back. The game finished up with St. John's winning by ten points; Longstone 3-7, St. John's 5-11.

Team and scorers:

Darren Morgan; Kevin Keenan, Joe Milligan; Conor Savage, Ryan Gordon, John Girvan; Neill Magorrian, Darren Burns (2-0); Martin Keenan (0-5, 0-1 fk), Hugh Flanagan, Jerome Gordon; Patrick Keenan, Chris McKay (3-6, 0-1 45', 0-2 fk). Subs: Neil Savage (for Conor Savage), Gavin Marmion (for Patrick Keenan)

This was a great win for the Minors considering they were without two of the usual starting team. This was the result of a team performance, where everyone played their role to perfection and showed a will to win as well as being committed and sticking to the game plan that ahs served us well all year.
